What were you doing before you started at Ubiqum Code Academy?

I was out of work for a while and I was thinking about whether I wanted to stay in Luxembourg or not and as I had time on my hands I started to think about doing something completely different. My background was in Law and I was working for the European Institutions as a legal translator. However, if I wanted to stay in Luxembourg I would have had to train in financial law. As I didn’t see myself working happily in that field I knew I had to retrain and change my career path.

Brainstorming with a friend, we asked ourselves the question: "What profile is in such high demand that you can get hired anywhere around the world?" Well, IT, of course! At that point I didn’t think it was possible to retrain and go into the IT field but then I found out about bootcamps.

Why did Ubiqum stand out as the best option when selecting a bootcamp?

Before signing up to Ubiqum, I did a 4 week bootcamp in Lithuania in order to see if I actually liked programming. After all, this was a big change for me and also a big economic investment so I wanted to see if I actually liked it.

The first time I wrote a little bit of code and saw the result, it was amazing! It gets you hooked. I then looked for a longer bootcamp in Barcelona and found Ubiqum. I chose it because, for me, 5 months was the perfect amount of time. I needed proper mentoring and support as this was all very new for me and I knew that short courses would not be enough.

When I learned more about the methodology and how it had already been applied for 10 years in the US and now in Europe, I thought, “I can trust this method. It’s worked for so many people for so many years, why not for me?”

What was your main concern before starting the course?

This is a very broad field and there are so many things I don’t know yet. I was afraid that I wouldn’t be able to grasp everything or that it would be too complicated. I thought “How is it possible to learn all these things in just 5 months?” But after only 2 weeks I was talking with my classmates and saying how when we began the course we didn’t even know how to write a proper HTML code. We were already looking back after only 2 weeks at how far we’d come!

Do you think our "learn by doing" methodology is effective?

It was so easy to get to grips with the material using this methodology, it’s incredible. From day one you’re working in a really practical way - it went so smoothly. I can compare my experience at Ubiqum, using this “learn by doing” methodology, to my more theoretical experience at the bootcamp in Lithuania and Ubiqum's method really works. It’s very important to see how you’re progressing and actually see the tangible results.

Why would you recommend Ubiqum?

For all the things I’ve mentioned combined. It’s the method that really works and anyone can do it. Here you have a great atmosphere and mentors who really care, they are there for us. I think I was really lucky to have the mentors I had; they helped us through our struggles and motivated us at the same time. When you're changing careers, you need people who can see where the potential lies and who can inspire you to go further and do more. The people who work at Ubiqum do exactly that and they are just as important as the method.

What would you say to a complete beginner? Or to someone who’s thinking about changing careers?

I’ve been there, I can imagine what you’re going through. If you’ve become fascinated by code like I did and have the motivation, you can do anything.

How did you find the process of finding a job?

It was incredibly quick, I didn’t expect it at all. Of course I put a lot of effort into it but I was amazed that I found a job so quickly. Web Developers and Programmers are in such high demand - I received a number of offers and it was great to be able to select the one I wanted.
